PURPOSE:To facilitate a selection operation at the time of reading plural kinds of different codes by providing a program selection part and a program memory on a head enclosure. CONSTITUTION:The program memory 18 provided on the head enclosure 3 is stored as plural decode programs for coding what kind of code a bar code being the object of code-reading is. A code change-over switch 16 functions as the program selection part selecting the decode program to be executed among respective decode programs. When the command signal of the code change-over switch 16 is inputted, a control operation part 14 reads the selected decoded program from the program memory 18, decodes an electric signal outputted from a photodetector 10 by the selected decode program and functions as a signal processing part generating code data. Thus, the selection operation at the tie of reading plural kinds of different codes can be facilitated.
