Brake system for full-track vehicles with one shift transmission (3) and one override steering gear (8) arranged transversely to the vehicle longitudinal axis (F) and two compound transmissions (5) arranged next to the two transmission output shafts (54). The shift transmission and the override steering gear and the compound gear and other mechanisms and devices are arranged as sub-assemblies (A, B, C, D, E, P) in or on a common housing according to DE-OS 3538002 and form a common transmission system. In a first embodiment the brake system comprises a secondary retarder (1) and a friction brake (2) which are both arranged on the input side of the compound transmission. In normal braking the secondary retarder (1) is first acted upon by the brake actuating device and the friction brake (2) only later. In a second example application a primary retarder (7) and a secondary retarder (1) are arranged in the area of the shift transmission and braking to a standstill is performed in a second function by one or more shift brakes (B1, B2, B3). Since all brakes are situated on the input side of the compound transmissions, there is no impairment whatsoever of the steering of the full-track vehicle when braking. <IMAGE>
