PURPOSE:To output an outline graphic at high speed by using a memory in which the picture element pattern of a contour extraction graphic corresponding to the picture element pattern is stored and a flip flop for holding a bit of continuous information. CONSTITUTION:By using the memory 3 in which the pattern for extracting contour is stored and the flip flop 4, complicated algorithm in software is eliminated, and a large quantity of memory for holding a coordinate value is eliminated, whereby contour extraction is executed in a short time. Namely, continuous information on (n) picture element pattern in an original picture and previous picture element pattern are set to addresses, and an contour graphic pattern stored in the address is outputted, whereby the contour for one direction (one among four directions of +X, -X, +Y and -Y) is extracted. By repeating this action four times, the complete graphic is obtained.
