An apparatus for the treatment, in particular filtration, of room air contains a plurality of filter stages through which the room air flows sequentially. To reduce the load on the filter stages, a self-cleaning prefilter is connected upstream of these. This operates by a combined electrostatic and ion-producing action and includes at least one collector surface, on which the substances removed from the room air can be isolated as a precipitate. This precipitate is periodically or continuously cleaned by a mechanical scraper device which carries out a movement relative to the collector surface. The particles scraped off the collector surface are received in a collection vessel and then disposed of (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
