Pressure-operated friction-disc clutch or brake with a piston-cylinder actuating device (1, 2) and a diaphragm spring (3) arranged between the piston (1) and a pressure plate (4) of the friction-disc clutch, the contact surfaces (11, 41) for the diaphragm spring (3) being arranged in principle at right angles to the axis (A) of the friction-disc clutch. To influence a force characteristic (K1, K2) during the engagement of the friction-disc clutch (4, 5, 6, 7), at least one of the contact surfaces (11, 41) has a contour (R1, R2, R4, 13) of defined shape which extends in the radial direction and deviates from the right angle. By virtue of the change in the attitude angle and the rolling of the point of contact of the diaphragm spring along the contact surface and the associated shortening of the lever arm (H), it is possible to achieve any desired pressure characteristic with a diaphram spring of standard configuration. The contour on the contact surface of the piston (1) and/or of the pressure plate (4) is simple and inexpensive to make. <IMAGE>
