Device for opening a cylindrical container made of sheet steel, which has an opening tape which is moulded on to the external casing sheet, if desired also on to an inner casing sheet, is circumferential and is connected to the assigned casing sheet by means of predetermined breaking seams. The device has a driveable clamping and transporting roller for the opening tape. The clamping and transporting roller is driven by a motor with interposition of a gear. An abutment shoe with an opening stage can be mounted on the casing sheet beneath the clamping and transporting roller. That end of the opening tape which is opened along the predetermined breaking seams can be inserted between the abutment shoe and the clamping and transporting roller. <IMAGE>
