A tape measure has a known flexible length mark support with legible length marks along its length, which can be pulled out from a housing. The known tape measures which can be read with the naked eye are often hard to read under unfavorable conditions of use and do not have the capability of entering the result in a computer other than by the user if the result is to be evaluated in such an instrument. According to the invention, however, the length marks (5) are equipped with electronic scanning means and an electronic scanning device (6) incorporated in the housing (1a, 1b) delivers an electronic measurement signal for each length mark (5) scanned. The measurement signals can either be added individually when the length mark support (3) is pulled out and subtracted when it is rewound or be characteristic of a coding of the length marks (5) which indicates their distance from a reference position (4) on the length mark support (3).
