<p>Modified asphalt compositions are described which comprise: (A) asphalt, and (B) a minor effective amount, sufficient to improve the durability of the asphalt in service, of at least one hydrocarbon-soluble acrylate polymer of formula (I) wherein R1 is a lower alkyl group containing from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, R2 is a mixture of alkyl groups containing from about 4 to about 20 carbon atoms, and x is an integer providing a weight average molecular weight (Mw) to the acrylate polymer of about 5000 to about 1,000,000. Generally, the modified asphalt compositions will contain from about 0.01 to about 10% by weight, based on the weight of the asphalt, of the acrylate polymer as defined. The modified asphalt compositions of the present invention are useful in roofing and in preparing aggregate-containing asphalt concretes which can be employed as paving compositions.</p> |
