PURPOSE:To improve ignitability of the captioned engine especially at the time of a low load by providing a projected heating surface having insulated structure at the central part of a cavity formed on the top surface of a piston, thereby forming a high temperature atmosphere accelerating the ignition of fuel particles. CONSTITUTION:A cavity 2 is formed in a recessed shape on the top surface of a piston 1 of a diesel engine and fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve 4 installed to a cylinder head 7. In the piston 1 like this, a projected part 3 is formed at the central part of the cavity 2. This projected part 3 is of insulated structure, so that its temperature can rise easily by combustion. In addition, the positional relation between the part 3 and the part 4 is set in such a manner that a fuel jet A from the fuel injection valve 4 passes in the vicinity of the tip part 6 of the projected part 3. With this contrivance, both vaporization and activation of the jet fuel is promoted in the vicinity of the tip part 6 of the projected part 3 that is in a high temperature state, thereby heightening the ignitability.
