A method for measuring the dispersion characteristics of an optical fibre consists in that there is launched into the optical fibre a light pulse train which is formed from a sequence of measurement pulses (MI) and a sequence of trigger pulses (TI) whose pulse width is a multiple of the measurement pulse width, the measurement pulses (MI) coming to be situated in blanking intervals of the trigger pulse train (TI), and in that the light pulse train transmitted via the optical fibre is used to derive the measurement signal pulses (MI) and the trigger signal pulses (TI) which are fed to a measuring device suitable for representing the pulse dispersion (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
