The rate of injection has, in practice, hitherto not been used as reference variable in engine timing, because no stable measuring sensors for the pressure in the injection valve were available and a flow measurement on the feed line to the injection valve is very inaccurate owing to the occurrence of gas or vapour bubbles. According to the invention, the pressure in the injection valve and the quantity or the flow of injection medium occurring are derived by means of a computer (3) from signals from transducers, which determine the lift of the closing member (1) of the injection valve (6) and the pressure in the feed line to the injection valve or the force (FA) with which the closing member (1) of the injection valve (6) in its opened limit position bears on a stop (23). <IMAGE>
