PURPOSE:To produce an elastomer having improved powder properties economically and stably, by polymerizing ethylene by the use of a specific catalytic system at first and then copolymerizing ethylene with an alpha-olefin under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:In the first process ethylene is subjected to slurry polymerization in propane and/or butane solvent or ethylene is polymerized in a gas phase by using a catalytic system containing at least a solid catalytic component obtained by impregnating a porous carrier (e.g. SiO2 or Al2O3) with a catalytic component consisting of at least Ti, Mg and Cl and an organoaluminum compound (e.g. triethylaluminum). In the second process, ethylene and an alpha-olefin are subjected to random copolymerization in a gas phase in such a way that ethylene content in the copolymer formed in the second process is 15-90mol.%, intrinsic viscosity in tetralin at 185 deg.C is 0.8-10 and the amount of the copolymer formed in the second process is 60-97wt.% based on sum of the polymers.
