PURPOSE:To realize high picture quality and to decrease relative speed of a tape and a head, by removing a spurious component to a video signal due to a pilot signal. CONSTITUTION:A means 16 which sets the frequency of the pilot signal at the frequency exceeding that of a MUSF signal band area, and generates the pilot signal in a burst manner only in a vertical blanking period and a synchronizing signal except the video signal is provided. A means 17 which adds the pilot signal on the MUSE signal, applies FM modulation, and records, and a means 24 which generates the clock of an A/D converter 25 in a time base correction circuit by the pilot signal reproduced in the burst manner at the time of reproduction are provided. In such a way, since no pilot signal is recorded in the period of the video signal, the spurious component to the video signal is removed, and also, it is possible to decrease the relative speed of the tape and the head since the band area of the video signal is not raised, and to keep a long recording time, and also, to heighten reliability by decreasing the rotating speed of the cylinder of a VTR.
