NEW MATERIAL:A diphenyloxazole derivative shown by formula I (R and R' are alkyl or H and at least one of R and R' is alkyl). EXAMPLE:2,5-Bis(4-octadecylphenyl)oxazole. USE:A raw material for producing a scintillator of extremely thin type, a probe to provide physical and chemical information, determination of fluorescence by extremely weak light excitation and inhibitor against light deterioration. Since the titled derivative can change carbon chain of alkyl group and adjust hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, the derivative can take the alkyl group in proper position in the interior or on the surface of LB membrane, micell, synthetic bimolecular membrane or biomembrane. PREPARATION:A benzocyanohydrin derivative shown by formula II is reacted with a benzaldehyde derivative shown by formula III in the presence of preferably a hydrogen halide to give a compound shown by formula I.
