PURPOSE:To extremely readily obtain ethanol, by irradiating an acidic aqueous solution containing carbon dioxide dissolved therein with light in the coexistence of zinc selenide powder having the surface modified with silicon carbide or a metal as a photocatalyst. CONSTITUTION:Carbon dioxide is dissolved in water by a well-known method and sulfuric acid is then preferably added to adjust the pH to 0-4. The resultant acidic aqueous solution is subsequently irradiated with light at 200-450nm wavelength in the coexistence of zinc selenide powder having the surface modified with silicon carbide and/or a metal, such as palladium, rhodium, platinum, gold or copper, and having about 10-40mum particle diameter as a photocatalyst to enable synthesis of ethanol from the carbon dioxide using the semiconductor catalyst incapable of conventionally synthesizing the ethanol. |
