A firing mechanism for an air weapon in which air is compressed in a cylinder (4) and expelled through a discharge port in the cylinder (4) to propel a projectile along a barrel by a piston (5) executing a firing stroke. The mechanism comprises a piston (5) slidably located within a cylinder (4) with the crown (5a) of the piston facing towards the discharge port. A spring (11) urges the piston (5) towards the discharge port. A bobbin (1) is located behind the piston crown, which is axially movable with the piston (5) during at least a portion of the firing stroke and is axially movable relative to the piston at the end of the firing stroke.
