The unit is arranged for positive operation without hunting, when switching power to electric motors etc. and which avoids contact welding. Operation involves moving contacts and associated iron cores in association with fixed contacts and cores. A frame supports a fixed contact and a crossmember supports the moving contact which operates in conjunction with the fixed contact to open and close the main current carrying circuit. A fixed iron is also supported by the frame and a movable iron core is mounted on the crossmember which carries the moving contact.
