PURPOSE:To generate apparently beautiful sentences without regard to irregular characters by combining two irregular characters into one em character to set the width of them to the width corresponding to one em character at the time of detecting that two irregular characters are continuous beyond a margin. CONSTITUTION:A word processor 50 is fundamentally provided with a CPU 51, ROM (CGROM) 52 is which characters, symbols, etc., are practically stored, a ROM 53 in which a program is stored, a RAM 54 including a working area 541 and an external character storage area 542 in which characters and symbols other those stored in the CGROM 52 are stored. If it is detected by a detecting means that two irregular characters are continuous on the outside of a printing area, two detected irregdular characters are combined to the width corresponding to one em character and are printed. Consequently, two continuous irregular characters practically occupy the width corresponding to one character, and the width of them is equal to that of one irregular character at the time of printing. Thus the outward appearance of a document is not made worse though characters are printed beyond the margin.
