PURPOSE:To make it possible to carry out high-density culture of anchorage- dependent cells, by using a water-insoluble spherical polymer particles having elasticity and vacuoles in the particles as a cell culture microcarrier. CONSTITUTION:A multiple emulsion of aqueous phase and/or monomer phase is formed by using a (meth)acrylic acid ester as a monomer component in the presence of an organic diluent and a polymerization initiator and subjected to suspension polymerization to produce water-insoluble polymer particles. Then a chemical residue or protein capable of positively charging with electricity is introduced to the particles by chemical modification method to produce a microcarrier. The particles constituting the microcarrier has 50-700mum average particle diameter in a culture substance, 1.00-1.15g/ml specific gravity. The vacuole volume in the particles/the volume of the particles X 100% is >=20% and the amount of the chemical residue capable of positively charging with electricity is adjusted to have 0.1-3.0meq ion exchange capacity based on 1g dried microcarrier.
