PURPOSE:To facilitate handling, by forming metal phthalocyanine in a state dispersed in a fibrous article composed of a stretchable polymer material such as polyamide. CONSTITUTION:For example, Cu-phthalocyanine and polyamide are dissolved in conc. sulfuric acid and the resulting solution is subjected to liquid crystal spinning to obtain a fibrous article which is, in turn, cut into a predetermined length to form a gas detection element 1. Next, the end of the element 1 is bonded to the electrodes 2, 2 formed on an alumina substrate 3 by the sputtering vapor deposition of Pt and the whole is sealed in a measuring cell A. Subsequently, DC voltage of about 75V is applied between the electrodes 2, 2 and a minute ammeter is connected to lead wires 6, 6 to calculate electric conductivity and, thereafter, NO2 gas is introduced into the cell A to be detected from the change of the minute ammeter. Since metal phthalocyanine is bonded to the polymer material, a crystal is not simply broken and, therefore, handling can be made easy.
