PURPOSE:To monostabilize polarity between two picture elements by providing layers comprising an insulative metal oxide and a surface modifier to an underground of an electrode formed on a substrate interposing ferroelectric liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION:Layers comprising an insulative metal oxide and a surface modifier are formed on an underground of an electrode on a substrate interposing ferroelectric liquid crystals. If a material for underground layers 2, 8 are selected in such a manner that remarkably different dipoles are generated in an upper substrate 1 and a low substrate 9 where an electrode is not present on one side, the direction of the spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal is directed in the direction of the dipole when both dipoles of the upper and lower substrates are in the same direction; thus the polarity is monostabilized. If the direction of the dipole of the upper substrate 1 is reverse to that of the lower substrate 9 and if there is a remarkable difference between the sizes of the both dipoles, the spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystals is directed in the direction of the larger dipole and monostabilized.
