PURPOSE:To control the tension of a thin wire simply and finely by installing a slack detecting roller having a conical peripheral surface in turnable ways around a vertical shaft between a pair of guide rollers and controlling the guide roller by detecting the number of revolution of the detecting roller. CONSTITUTION:A slack detecting roller 6 is arranged between a pair of guide rollers 9 and 9'. A wire material W is attached onto the conical peripheral surface 6a of the slack detecting roller 6, and travels between the rollers 9 and 9'. The slack detecting roller 6 is directly connected with a rotary encoder 7 by a rotary shaft 10 in the vertical direction, and can be freely revolved around the rotary shaft. Though the wire material W travels in contact with the detecting roller 6, keeping a certain slack, the contact part is shifted upwardly when the tension of the wire material W increases, and the contact part contacts the outer peripheral surface 6a having a small trunk diameter, and the number of revolution of the rotary encoder 7 is increased. Guide rollers 9 and 9' are controlled by a controller 8 according to the difference from the set value, and the tension can always be kept constant.
