PURPOSE:To uniformly exchange ions between glass rods and in the glass rod, by dipping the glass rod vertically in a molten salt, and vertically reciprocating the glass rod while dipping the glass rod in the molten salt and the ions in the glass rod are exchanged to produce the title refractive index distribution type lens. CONSTITUTION:The glass rod is dipped in the molten salt, and the ion in the glass and the ion in the salt are exchanged to produce the refractive index distribution type lens. The following constitution is provided for the process. Namely, the glass rod is vertically dipped in the molten salt, and then vertically reciprocated continuously or intermittently. The following constitution is preferably used in the process. Namely, the glass rod 1 is housed in a barrel 5 with both ends opened and having sufficient length to cover the whole length of the rod 1, and held by holders 2 and 3, and the barrel 5 and the glass rod 1 are simultaneously reciprocated.
