PURPOSE:To exhibit an automatic slack adjusting function in a slack adjuster for automatically adjusting a relative position between an input lever of a mechanical brake and a drive shaft, by providing a designed one-way clutch between the lever and the drive shaft. CONSTITUTION:When a lever is rotated from a position a to a position b, a ball or roller 12 contacting an inner-diameter surface 6a of a boss is rolled from a solid line to a chain line to make a retainer 13 sink by x against a spring 14. A quantity of rotation theta of the lever corresponds to a stroke for eliminating a gap between a friction plate and a disc in a brake. That is, at the timing when a contact resistance of the roller 12 to the surface 6a overcomes a rotational resistance of a shaft 5, the shaft 5 follows the rotation of the lever, and the above gap is eliminated by a piston. If the gap between the disc and the friction plate is eliminated before the lever reaches the position b, the lever idles till the position b. Therefore, a clutch is always turned on at the position b.
