PURPOSE:To detect 2nd and succeeding original read reference positions with accuracy at all times by setting 2nd and succeeding index means for reference position detection at plural original read reference positions in a coordinate system which determines a 1st original read reference position. CONSTITUTION:When original read reference position processing is performed, a shading correcting circuit 211 performs processing. Namely, a signal SG1 sent out of a CCD driver 23 is stored in a storage device 212 synchronized with a synchronizing signal for a one-line read. Then a CPU 208 read the contents of the storage device 212 in synchronism with said synchronizing signal. When original read reference positions are detected in 'sheet mode', original read reference positions in 'book mode' are detected and moved in a direction A by the specific number of lines, and the detection processing for the original read reference positions in 'sheet mode' is performed.
