PURPOSE:To improve the flexibility of an image reader by outputting image signals which matches with various types of host machines only through the switching of the operation of a specifying means. CONSTITUTION:The subscanning direction of a read part 10 is selected and specified corresponding to the signal processing system of a host machine, the main scanning direction is held constant, and a read image signal is stored in a buffer memory 14. A read control part 15 reads the image signal out of the buffer memory 14 in the main scanning direction. In this case, packs of, for example, several bits are read out in parallel. A converting circuit 20 changes signal arrays of this parallel image signal. Parallel data are changed in array upon occasion and serial data, on the other hand, are converted from parallel to serial by selecting its output order. Image signal which matches with various host machines are therefore outputted by selecting the operations of those circuits properly.
