Grey cast iron is produced by melting together in a cupola pig iron, steel scap and a silicon-containing material, the pig iron and steel scrap being in a ratio such as to provide less than the necessary amount of carbon, and the silicon-containing material consisting of metallurgical briquettes in amount sufficient to supply the additional necessary carbon and silicon and composed of by weight:- .Si.............25 to 50% .C.............12 to 35% .Cr.............0 to 25% .Mn.............0 to 10% inorganic siliceous binder such as sodium silicate or Portland cement 5 to 20%, with iron and impurities as balance, where the ratio Si to C is 1 to 3. Alloys, such as Fe-Si, Fe-Cr-Si, Fe-Si-Cr, Si-Mn, Fe-Mn and high carbon Fe-Cr, may be used as materials in preparing the briquettes, adjustments being made by adding silicon and/or graphite. The briquette materials are mixed with water and compacted. Two briquette compositions not within the scope of the invention are described as follows:- ....(a).(b) .Si.......40%.36.4% .Mn.......9%.1.8% .Cr.......8.6%.3.3% .Fe.+binder....balance.balance
|
