PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst for polymerization, containing a sulfonium salt having an alkoxy group and capable of polymerizing an epoxy resin or cationic polymerizable vinyl compound by heat treatment at a relatively low temperature in a short time. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst for polymerization containing a sulfonium salt, having an alkoxy group and expressed by the formula [R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or substituted alkyl expressed by the formula CnH2n+1 (n is 1-4); R2 is H, (substituted)alkyl or alkoxy expressed by the formula CnH2n+1 (n is 0-4) or OCnH2n+1 (n is 1-4) and two or more R2 groups may be present; R3 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or substituted alkyl expressed by the formula CnH2n+1 (n is 1-8); X<-> is metal halide]. The above-mentioned catalyst is used in an amount of 0.01-5wt.% based on the epoxy resin or vinyl compound and utilized as coating, sealing materials or matrix resins for composite materials.
