PURPOSE:To obtain a sustained release preparation of theophylline, containing theophylline or a derivative or a salt thereof, an insoluble high polymer and an enteric high polymer. CONSTITUTION:A sustained release table of theophylline, containing 10-70wt.% theophylline or a derivative (e.g. aminophylline, choline theophylline or diphylline) a salt (e.g. theophylline calcium salicylate), 10-70wt.% insoluble high polymer (e.g. ethyl cellulose, aminoalkyl methacrylate copolymer, polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl chloride) and 5-55wt.% enteric high polymer (e.g. phthalic acid cellulose acetate or maleic acid cellulose acetate). The tablet finally collapses completely by matrix release in the stomach and by dissolution and matrix release in the intestine and releases the total amount of theophylline to provide desirable blood concentration.
