PURPOSE:To automatically determine the highest writing recording density by comparing the plural recording densities which can be processed of a magnetic tape device and the recording density which can be written on a magnetic tape medium and determining the recording density at the time of the writing process. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic tape device 201 communicates the recording densities (D1=6250RPI) 101 and (D2=800RPI) 102 which can be processed by a communicating means 1 to a means 3 for determining the writing recording density. On the other hand, the magnetic tape medium 202 communicates the max. recording density M=1600RPI which can be recorded by a communicating means 2 to a means 3 for determining the writing recording density. The means 3 compares the recording density Dn which can be recorded of the magnetic tape device 201 and the max. recordable density M of the medium 202 in descending order, determines the first Dn which gives Dn<=M to obtain n=2, D2=800, thus determining the writing recording density 4 as 800RPI.
