In a terry fabric, especially for blankets and cloths, with pile threads (3, 4) forming loops on only one side of the fabric, between any two loops succeeding one another in the warp direction the pile thread (3, 4) forming these loops bears stretched on the basic fabric in a floating manner over at least two weft threads (2). In order to achieve this bearing contact, during the beating-up of each weft group the tension of those pile threads which have to form a portion bearing in a floating manner against the basic fabric is increased to a value which prevents loop formation. For this purpose, the weaving machine has a warp beam for each group of pile threads and a separate tension device for each of these groups. <IMAGE>
