In order to increase the cooling effect of piston cooling for internal combustion engines by coolant sprayed onto the rear side of the piston by means of at least one nozzle (9), a coolant vaporising on the rear side of the piston is used and the coolant vapour fed through a blow-by line (16) leaving the crankcase (1) to a condenser (17) delivering into a coolant tank (12), the blow-by gases being fed to the intake line (6) of the internal combustion engine by way of a connecting line (19). <IMAGE>
