A method for monitoring the thickness of a strip (8) poured onto a moving cooling surface (6) from a melting crucible (1) makes it possible to determine the quantity of strip cast per unit time and hence to determine the strip thickness by measurement of the temperature of the cooling surface (6) or the temperature of the coolant which cools the cooling surface.
