According to the invention, improved combustion is achieved in reciprocating piston internal combustion engines in that the air for charging the engine is heated and fuel, which vaporises completely due to the heat of the air, is injected into the heated air. The gas mixture thus produced contains either no or only very few minute fuel liquid droplets and therefore burns more completely and hence more cleanly. Adequate inlet cross-sections, achieved by roller-type rotary slide valves, ensure satisfactory charging of the engine.
