Removal of PVC protective coatings, bonded with acrylic adhesive is carried out by placing the coated pts. in a bath of conc. dimethylformamide (DMF) until at least the PVC has dissolved. To remove residual acrylic adhesive, the pts. are pref. placed in a bath of conc. H3PO4 until the adhesive has dissolved. Treatment is carried out in the DMF bath at 60-70 deg.C and the H3PO4 bath at ca. 110 deg.C. The treated pts. are washed with warm water, pref. by spraying with warm water under pressure for 60 s after removing from the second bath. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is useful for removing PVC from metal pts., esp. unalloyed steel, chrome steel, chrome-nickel steel, Al, PTFE-coated metal, high mol. polyethylene, polypropylene and graphite. The process minimises hand labour, esp. tearing the film off by hand, which is tiring and hazardous. The entire operation can be automated.
