PURPOSE:To obtain the titled mold material capable of readily and inexpensively providing an optical element having highly precise face and shape accuracy without requiring cold polishing process, by coating at least optical element molding part of the surface of raw material consisting of a specific glass with a thin film of oxide type ceramics. CONSTITUTION:The titled mold material having desired shape is prepared using a glass having a transition temperature higher than molding temperature of an optical element raw material molded and 50-150X10<-7>/ deg.C linear expansion coefficient or as necessary crystallized glass ceramics or chemically cuttable photosensitive glass ceramics having as same linear expansion coefficient as the above-mentioned glass and the surface of the mold material is coated with a thin film consisting of >=1 kind of oxide type ceramics selected from Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, etc., by means such as chemical or physical vapor deposition, etc.
