PURPOSE:To prevent the proliferation of bacteria, by a method wherein a germicidal chemical agent is added to recirculation aqueous system where bacteria proliferate to be recirculated in the system to perform washing and the concn. of an antibacterial agent is subsequently held to a specific value. CONSTITUTION:An acid such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or nitric acid or an org. sterilizing agent such as glutaraldehyde or 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3- diol is added to a recirculation aqueous system not only to adjust a pH-value to 2 or less but also to adjust the concn. thereof to a value three times or less the MBC value (minimum inhibitory concn.) of an antibacterial agent. By performing operation under this condition, the generation of bacteria can be prevented over a long period of time and environmental contamination can be prevented.
