A method for removing immunoglobulin-G and immune complexes from blood comprises withdrawing a small, discrete volume of blood from a patient, separating the blood volume into its cellular and plasma components, immediately reinfusing the cellular components to the patient, passing the plasma components through a protein A immunoadsorbent, and reinfusing the treated plasma to the patient. By treating relatively small volumes of blood and employing an inert, non-colloidal protein A immunoadsorbent, typically protein A covalently bound to microcrystalline silica, greatly reduced side effects are observed without loss of efficacy. In treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, the treatment protocol is repeated periodically, usually at least once per week for a period of four weeks or longer. A cartridge for use in such treatment is described, in which a charge of the immunoadsorbent may be contained in a cylinder (12). |
