The circuit is particularly intended for through supply cables of trains and is used for controlling a group of switching devices which are each connected between a first conductor and a further conductor and respond to a d.c. voltage signal of predetermined polarity. To increase the information that can be transmitted through the multiconductor cable whilst maintaining compatibility with the control of this switching element in accordance with a specified standard, an additional arrangement of switches is provided, by means of which, in order to transmit additional functions, the conductor carrying a common potential is switched to a control potential whilst one of the other conductors has the common potential applied to it, so as to control another switching device which responds to a signal with this polarity.
