PURPOSE:To prepare a large-area electrochromic element which is high in the response speed, durable free from liquid leakage, and easy to prepare, by sandwiching a particular resin compsn. and an electrochromic substance between a pair of counter electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A resin compsn. comprising cyanoethyl polyvinyl alcohol of the formula I (wherein l/m>0.1) or cyanoethyl-modified polyvinyl acetal of the formula II (wherein R is alkyl; and l/(m+n)>0.1) and an electrolyte dispersed therein and an electrochromic substance are sandwiched between a pair of counter electrodes to prepare an electrochromic element. In the formula I, when l/m is 0.1 or less, the ionic conductivity is lowered because the number of ether chains is small. It is pref. from the viewpoint of ionic conductivity that l/m be 0.2 or more. In the formula II, when l(m+n) is 0.1 or less, the ionic conductivity is lowered because the number of ether chains or polar groups is small. It is pref. from the viewpoint of ionic conductivity that l(m+n) be 0.2 or more.
