PURPOSE:To suppress interfacial mismatching between a core and a clad and to enable the production of an optical fiber having excellent environmental resistance, by immersing a transparent glass rod or glass pipe constituting the core part or clad part of an optical fiber preform in a solution containing an organometallic compound. CONSTITUTION:A solution 3 containing organometallic compound is poured into a vessel 4. The solution is e.g. ethanol solution of tetraethoxysilane. A pure quartz glass rod 1 is immersed in the solution for a prescribed period, taken out of the solution and dried to obtain a treated rod 5. A thin film 8 is formed on the surface of the rod 5 by this treatment to smoothen the surface. The rod 5 is set in a plasma apparatus and an F-containing glass clad 15 is deposited to the outer surface of the rod by outer deposition method. The objective optical fiber is produced by melting the obtained optical fiber preform with heat and spinning the molten glass. |
