PURPOSE:To simply confirm recording contents without tape rewinding or reproduction by reading and displaying a picture at timer reservation recording after being stored held in a field memory. CONSTITUTION:A timer setting circuit 102 designates a broadcast channel number, a recording start/end time or the like and stores it in a timer control circuit 101. The timer control circuit 101 has a timepiece function and when a timer recording start time is reached, power is applied to a VTR system to record the designated broadcast channel. At the start of timer recording or at a proper time of the recording a disignation signal is sent so that one field of a recording picture is written in the storage device 11 via a control circuit 14 from the timer control circuit 101 while the longitudinal/lateral length is reduced to 1/3 by the transmission of designation signal. Thus, a reduced pattern whose area is 1/9 is written in a memory 11a.
