PURPOSE:To stabilize a film thickness by enhancing coating gap accuracy, in applying a coating solution containing a low b.p. solvent by a reverse roll coater, by applying heating to both sides of a metering roll. CONSTITUTION:The coating solution adhered to an applicator roll 2 over the entire width thereof through a fountain coater is shaven so as to coincide with the nip width accurately set by a reversely rotating metering roll 3. Therefore, the coating solution on the applicator roll 2 remains on both sides thereof and, in the case of the coating solution containing a low b.p. solvent, both sides of the roll 2 are contracted by the heat of evaporation generated when the solvent is evaporated. Then, both sides of the metering roll 3 are expanded by heating corresponding to the deformed applicator roll 2 and each of the diameters of both sides is made larger than that of the central part to make the gap between the rolls 2, 3 constant over the entire widths thereof.
