PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of accidents by driving a carrying means only for a prescribed time to carry a developing device in one direction while detecting the position of the developing device by a developing device detecting means in case of restoration from an abnormal state. CONSTITUTION:A developing device storage device B in which at least two developing devices can be stored, the carrying means which carries a developing device 13C selected from the developing device storage device B to an image forming position in a device body, and a developing detecting means S0 which detects the presence or the absence of the developing device 13C are provided. In case of restoration from an abnormal state of jamming, power-off, or the like, the carrying means is driven only for a prescribed time to carry the developing device in one direction while detecting the position of the developing device 13C by the developing device detecting means S0. Since the developing device is carried to a prescribed position by the carrying means after restoration from the abnormal state though the developing device is stopped halfway on the carrying path by the occurrence of the abnormal state of jamming, power- off, or the like, the occurrence of trouble like damage of the developing device is prevented.
