PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ultrafine fiber having excellent mechanical strength and high aspect ratio in good yield and productivity, by feeding a transition metal compound as a catalyst source and carbon source compound to a heating zone space and reacting the above-mentioned compounds. CONSTITUTION:(A) A carrier gas, (B) a carbon source compound, (C) a catalyst source compound and (D) a sulfur compound are fed to a heating zone at >=1,200 deg.C heating zone temperature under condition so as to provide >=0.26mol./g feed rate (mol.) of the carrier gas (A) fed to the heating zone per unit time based on the feed rate (g) of the carbon source compound (B) per unit time and 0.01-10wt.% content of the catalyst source compound (C) based on the fed component (B) to afford the aimed fiber.
