PURPOSE:To produce a cis-cyclopentene-3,5-diol monoester, by subjecting a cyclopentene-3,5-diol diester to ester interchange with an enzyme in an organic solvent containing an aliphatic alcohol. CONSTITUTION:A cyclopentene-3,5-diol diester shown by formula (R is lower alkyl group) is subjected to ester interchange in an organic solvent containing an aliphatic alcohol by the use of an enzyme to give an optically active cis- cyclopentene-3,5-diol monoester shown by formula II (R is as shown for the formula I). PPL, lipase P, lipase A and lipase F-AP may be cited as the enzyme used. Pentane and hexane are cited as the organic solvent containing aliphatic alcohol and the amount of the aliphatic alcohol is >=equimolar amount based on 1mol. raw material diester.
