PURPOSE:To increase the electrolytic current at the time of producing metallic Mg by the electrolysis of molten MgCl and improve the productivity of metallic Mg by cooling an MgCl molten salt in a circulating passage on the outside of an electrolytic cell, and simultaneously removing sludge. CONSTITUTION:When an MgCl molten salt bath L is electrolyzed in the electrolytic cell 1 to produce metallic MgM, the electrolytic current is increased to increase the output of Mg. In this case, the temp. of the molten salt bath L is excessively increased, and the electrolysis efficiency and current efficiency are decreased. To obviate these phenomena, the high-temp. MgCl molten salt bath L is sent up through a riser pipe 21 while being cooled by the coil gaseous Ar injected from a gas injection pipe 27, further cooled by a water-cooled jacket 31 of an upper cooling chamber 22, then sent into a sludge removing chamber 24 through a first downcommer 23 to settle and remove the sludge, and then returned to the electrolytic cell 1 through a second downcommer 25 as the low-temp. MgCl molten salt bath free of sludge. The gaseous Ar is cooled by a heat exchanger 29, compressed by a compressor 30, injected into the riser pipe 21, and sent up as the bubbles of the gaseous Ar while cooling the MgCl molten salt L.
