PURPOSE:To detect a stain on an optical disk or an optical system in a device, by comparing a bit of error information detected by recording and reproducing a test data on a self-diagnosing area with a bit of initial error information reproduced from an error managing area, and diagnosing the recording and reproducing function of the optical disk. CONSTITUTION:A data is taken out from a data buffer 22 as a buffer data 117, and the total number of the initial error symbols of the self-diagnosing area 32 is store in an error information memory 23. A main control circuit 11 sends an error total number data 122 in which the total number of the error symbols is formated to the data buffer 22. An error comparator 20 compares the buffer data 117 taken out from the data buffer 22 with an error information data 121 taken out from the error information memory 23, and finds a ratio of them. When an obtained ratio exceeds a reference value M, it is decided that the stain is attached on optical disk or the optical system, then, a stain detecting signal 130 representing that a recording and reproducing function is not performed normally is sent to the main control circuit 11. When the ratio is less than the prescribed reference value M, it is decided that the recording and reproducing function is normal, thereby, the execution of a self-diagnosing operation can be completed.
