PURPOSE:To project an vivid color image as a back projecting type and a forward projecting type by constituting a device with three liquid crystal display bodies provided in parallel, a color separation unit and a color synthesization unit provided before and behind the liquid crystal display bodies. CONSTITUTION:A white light beam from a light source is separated to the components of red, green and blue by the color separation unit 51 of the liquid crystal display device 5 and they are respectively made incident on the liquid crystal display bodies 52, 53 and 54 and modulated. Then each modulated component light of red, green and blue is synthesized by the color synthesization unit 55. By a projecting lens, this synthesized video light is reflected by a total reflection mirror 7 and of which image is formed on the back projecting type screen 8 when the total reflection mirror is situated within a projecting optical path and when it is situated outside the projecting optical path, the image of the synthesized video light is formed on the forward projecting type screen.
