PURPOSE:To accelerate and facilitate image pickup at an optimum exposure value, by reading out electric charge exceeding a threshold value, and detecting the optimum exposure value. CONSTITUTION:When a prescribed light quantity of light is made incident on a solid-state image pickup element 3 and the electric charge in the solid-state image pickup element 3 exceeding the threshold value is read out, it is judged that the electric charge with the optimum light quantity is accumulated in the solid-state image pickup element 3 by an electric charge detection circuit 13. After that, the threshold value is changed to 0 by a video take out means, and all of the electric charge accumulated in the solid-state image pickup element 3 are read out.
